We will also be featuring two songs from our upcoming season which begins after the New Years.
Selected songs from R&B Royalty, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Tommy and Zappa will also be performed by the kids at the School Of Rock.

The famous Jeweler, Tom Sauve (Jon Sharpy's Uncle), is coming from Maui to
show and sell his pieces!

Tom has made custom pieces for many celebrities including Cher. His
collection will include pieces of all price ranges including very affordable
pieces that our kids may want to purchase.

Tom will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the PROWUS scholarship
fund for the Portland School of Rock.

If you are interested in making a donation or volunteering at the party,

Here's some important information that makes the show season go smoothly.
Parents, please read carefully, ESPECIALLY if your student has not yet been
on a show.

Load-In (Performer Drop-off)

Performers need to be at Berbati's Pan (213 SW Ankeny Street 97204) at 12:30 the day of the show. The entrance is the black door on the east side of SW 3rd Avenue between West
Burnside and Voodoo Donuts. Please drop your student off, but do not stay in
the venue unless you are working as a parent volunteer. There will be
instructors/staff people checking them in.

Dinner Break

A dinner break for performers will take place between 3:30 and 4:30. Parents
can take performers during the dinner break OR provide them with $5 cash to
cover their dinner of pizza and soda. A group of parent volunteers will
escort the students to Captain Ankeny's, a few doors down from Berbati's. If
you plan to take your child during the dinner break, please tell the show
director, and have them back at Berbati's by 4:30.

The club portion of Berbati's is closed to all parents and students during
the dinner hour.

Expected Conduct

For safety reasons, performers are not allowed to leave the venue from the
time they are checked in until they leave with their parents at the end of
the show (except for the dinner break). All trips to Voodoo Donuts, Old Time
Music, etc., must take place BEFORE load-in.

Students should treat the venue, venue staff, and fellow performers with
respect. No drumming on benches or tables, and please be an attentive
audience for all performers. See the Parent Handbook for more information
about conduct.

What to Bring

-Drummers - several pairs of drum sticks.

-Guitar/Bassists - Show directors will determine which guitar's and bass will be brought to the show. There will only be 5 or 6 guitars and 2 basses at the show. Performers will share instruments. There is not enough room for everyones instruments. But please bring your own picks if you use them!

12:30-Arrival time at Berbati's for all student performers

12:45-Doors open for audience, including parents

1:00-AFTERNOON SHOW! (should go until about 3:30ish)

THE PIXIES SHOW HAS BEEN MOVED TO SUNDAY MAY 17th due to some booking complications. The venue is still BERBATIS but there are a few changes in the day-of-show schedule.

Showband performs at Young Animators & Musician Event Saturday April 25th! Read More!

Hello everyone!

Here are a air of flyers that explain a little about the upcoming
Young Animators & Musicians Event, happening SATURDAY APRIL 25, and
featuring the SOR Show Band
(playing at about 2:02 in the afternoon).

The Event takes place from 10 to 4, at the Multnomah Arts Center: 7688 SW
Capitol Highway, (in Multnomah Village, y'know, between Vermont & Multnomah Blvd, over by Marco's, after you take that second 5 South exit out of Portland, just after Terwilliger. It's a chance for some local young animators and musicians to mingle, play, create, and get a little acknowledgment for their skills and passion.

Free and Family friendly, with an optional donation of food or funds to the
Neighborhood House.

Portland is crawling with animators and musicians-- professionals and other
enthusiasts-- and this is a chance to use some grant money to provide a bit
of studio/ venue/ gallery/ stage for our young and future peers & leaders.

Every parent/guardian who has a student enrolled in the School of Rock is a voting member of PROWUS, the fabulous fundraising arm of the parent organization (1 vote per kid)!

As members, you get to elect the board of directors, the active members of PROWUS and supporting our kids in fundraising activities. This is a very important meeting for us as after this meeting, we can officially file for non-profit status! We’d love your presence and your vote at the meeting March 15th.

Even better, choose to be a member of the board! We invite you to join our awesome team! And we’re looking for one or two School of Rock students as members of the board, so you can represent your fellow students.

What to expect as a member of the board:

• Be part of a feel-good organization, creating opportunities for kids to excel at our School of Rock and in the arts community at large!

• Attend regularly scheduled meetings (approximately 12-15 per year; monthly, except during some periods of heavy activity)

• Bring fresh ideas for future fundraising projects and events and help get things done

• Have a voice in how the money gets spent - this is the fun part; we get to play Santa!

What we’ve accomplished so far:

Through the efforts of a fledgling committee and the support of our fabulous community, we’ve already raised over $2,000 and have gotten our fundraising off to a great start!

• We have a vending machine and sell water and snacks at the school

• We’ve purchased a replacement VOX amplifier and a toolbox for the benefit of all instructors and kids

• We’ve earmarked funds to be used for future scholarship needs

• We are sponsoring our second GET YOUR ART ON poster contest for season show posters, with prizes for winning students

• We have raised enough seed money to sponsor future fundraising events and to file our fee for non-profit status.

Four New Classes Offered at the Portland School of Rock!

ROCK N ROLL CHOIR!
DRUM CORP!
RECORDING 101!
GUITARMY!

ROCK n ROLL CHOIR is a weekly 45 minute lesson that teaches ensemble based vocals at the group level. The class focuses on the development of strong harmonization skills. The curriculum utlizes songs within the rock pantheon that rely heavily on vocal harmonization and point/counterpoint arrangements (i.e. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Because by The Beatles, Sloop John B by The Beach Boys, etc.). In addition to songs, the curriculum includes vocal exercises that assists in ear/pitch training and vocal control/blending.

Tuition for ROCK N ROLL CHOIR would be $55

DRUM CORP is a weekly 45 minute group lesson focused on ensemble percussion. The curriculum centers on the poly-rhythmic aspects of Afro-Cuban, African, and Far Eastern percussion groups. A series of compositions and exercises that develop sight reading skills, rhythmic independence, proficiency in odd numbered groupings, and development of a strong grasp of polyrhythms will be featured. Although developed for drummers, this class develops vital rhythmic skills for any SOR student.

Tuition for DRUM CORP would be $55

RECORDING 101 is a weekly 45 minute lesson that teaches kids how to record their own music. This class is dedicated to breaking down recording techniques such as micing drums, recording guitars, vocal tracking, mixing and editing in various different programs including: Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Ableton, and Sonar. Classes will take you from installing your program, getting your interface working (what do you mean by interface?), utilizing the instruments and effects built in to each program, and recording live instruments.

Tuition for RECORDING 101 is $55

GUITARMY, inspired by Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitar Players, this class will challenge every guitarist, regardless of proficiency level. The weekly 45 minute sessions will focus on a series of exercises that develop sight reading, accuracy, rhythmic independence, and dynamics. In addition, scores of several arrangements, for up to 10 guitarists, of King Crimson, Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and other artists to be provided and rehearsed.

Tuition for GUITARMY would be $55

West Coast Allstars Audition!

Auditions have been announced for the West Coast Allstarts! They are MONDAY MARCH 16th from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. at the school. Interested students need to have been in Showband in the past year. Details about the actual audition are posted at the school.

For parents of a qualifying ALLSTAR student:
Rehearsals will start in April and will be two times a month, one in Portland and one in Seattle.
Students that get invited to be a part of West Coast AllSTARS will have to participate in an 8-10 day tour in early August with the Denver, Salt Lake City and Seattle schools.

The financial commitment will be equal to approximately one month's tuition.

Notice of First Meeting of PROWUS a non-profit organization for the Portland School of Rock

PROWUS, the fund-raising branch of our fabulous parent organization, is
applying for non-profit, 501(c)3 status. Since September PROWUS has already
raised nearly $2000, and with a non-profit status, we will be able to apply
for grants and take our fund-raising to a whole new level. A requirement of
the filing process is a Membership meeting to vote in Directors and approve
the purpose of the organization.

As parents/guardians of enrolled School of Rock students, you are all
considered members, and you have a vote at this meeting. The meeting takes
place on SUNDAY March 15th, 6:00 PM at School of Rock. Please exercise
your vote and learn more about PROWUS by attending this meeting.

Annual Payment Plan!

Hello Everyone!

I'm not sure if some of you are aware of our Annual Payment Plan so I thought I would post this on our blog and give you all the details. The Paul Green School Of Rock has a new annual program that offers 10% off the annual tuition - this is a savings of more than one free month of tuition! This discount applies to full tuition students (no scholarship students) and it's based on your tuition no matter how many instruments your child takes!

The other important thing to note, is that you can cancel at anytime. We'll just refund the balance at a pro-rated (non-discounted) basis, minus a $50.00 administrative fee.

So I thought it would be an cool idea to put together a staff page that would give you a little bit of information about who we all are at The Portland School Of Rock. Many of you are new to the school, and some of you may have not met a few of the teachers that come in on days when you're not. We wanted to tell you a little bit more about this very awesome and incredibly important workshop for anyone who is serious about becoming a musician. Attention new (and continuing) School of Rock Portland parents!

The first week of February we've scheduled a series of parent meetings open
to any and all parent/guardians of School of Rock students. Attendance at
one of these meetings is highly recommended, especially if you're new to
School of Rock. We'll cover such topics as...

-How a typical season works - song castings, rehearsals, getting ready for
shows
-What to expect during show season
-How to help your student with his SOR experience
-How to stay informed
-Who's who at the school
-What other opportunities your student has at SOR
-What to do if you have questions, concerns
-Support organizations at the school, i.e., Yahoo parent group and PROWUS,
our fundraising committee.

Please bring your questions to the meeting and we'll get them answered!

All meetings will be held at the School of Rock, and led by Linda Hefferman,
our on-staff School of Rock parent.

Here are the meeting times and dates:

SUNDAY FEB. 1ST, 11:00 AM (first Pixies rehearsal)
WEDNESDAY FEB. 4TH, 6:30 PM (after Rock 101)
THURSDAY FEB. 5TH, 7:00 PM (last hour of first Ozzy/Dio rehearsal)

Best of Season Show to Benefit our Scholarship Fund!

Next Saturday, January 24th, the Paul Green School of Rock Portland Branch is joining forces with their sister school in Seattle for a huge "Best of Season Show" Benefit! This is a fundraiser with a suggested donation of $ 10.00 with all the proceeds going into the schools scholarship fund!

This will be the first time that the Portland branch and Seattle branch are coming together for this kind of fundraiser. With everyone being hit hard financially during these difficult times, we don't want any child to miss out on the chance to rock, so please come out and help us help your kids rock!

The schools will perform the best three songs from their last season shows and the set list is going to please just about everyone who calls themself a music fan! The set list will include songs from each of the following artists/genres:

Aerosmith, The 80's, Progressive Rock, Grunge, Radiohead, The Monkees and Black Sabbath.

Another exciting part of the evening will be our raffle! For $ 5.00, you can purchase a raffle ticket with the chance to win a new Gibson Les Paul Studio Guitar! This beautiful guitar is made of tiger maple with a blonde finish. The retail value is $ 1800.00!

One lucky raffle ticket holder will walk away with this gorgeous guitar at the end of the night! Check it out!

First Blog for the Portland School of Rock!

Welcome to the Portland School of Rock Blog!
We'll let you know about ongoing events, have links to our calendar of rehearsals and shows and more. For now, we've got some upcoming shows!

This Saturday January 10th the kids will perform a collection of Prog Rock songs which will pretty much blow your mind! The kids from Rock 101 will open the show so be there 5:15 at Berbatis.
Here is the poster for the show!

The week after, on Saturday January 17th come be astounded as the kids perform Radiohead songs. The music will be accompanied by visuals and lights. It's going to be awesome! 5:30 doors 6:00 pm show!

On Friday February 6th come to Berbatis again for our Tribute to Aerosmith! This should be a rocking good time! There is one show only for this. Doors at 7:00 show at 8:00!

Please stay tuned for information on our BEST OF SEASON SHOW which is scheduled for Saturday January 24th at Berbatis. This show will feature songs from all of the above shows along with best songs from our Seattle Branch's shows!!! This should be a great time to meet other kids and parents from our Seattle Branch!
